I consider this interview with Eugene Tsui a very interesting opportunity for Italy, that of encountering a man such as yourself that is able to influence the world with the unique force of your works. With this in mind I wanted to emphasize with my questions and your answers on helping the generations that today want to operate in our society and our environment as designers, architects and artists.

Autore di THE URGENCY OF CHANGE, EVOLUTIONARY ARCHITECTURE: NATURE AS A BASIS FOR DESIGN, HENZHEN ECOLOGICAL THEME PARK CONCEPT BOOK ed una monografia WORLD ARCHITECTURE REVIEW.

Dr. Eugene Tsui (AIA, NCARB, APA) is a licensed architect and contractor, city and regional planner, industrial designer/artist, educator, investigative scientist, inventor, musician, competitive athlete, publisher, President of Tsui Design and Research, Inc. and Chairman of the Telos Foundation, a nonprofit foundation for educating the public about design, headquartered in Emeryville, California USA. He is the author of four publications on Architecture.THE URGENCY OF CHANGE (2002), EVOLUTIONARY ARCHITECTURE: NATURE AS A BASIS FOR DESIGN , SHENZHEN ECOLOGICAL THEME PARK CONCEPT BOOK, and a monograph by WORLD ARCHITECTURE REVIEW. He is perhaps the first architect/designer in history to profoundly study, analyze and implement the workings of natural phenomena, through an interdisciplinary approach, as a basis for design at all scales including construction materials and methods. He is the originator of the term, Evolutionary Architecture, which is an understanding of producing designs based upon a rigorous scientific study of natural organisms, structures and processes. His work vastly expands and extends beyond the paradigm of “Ecological design”. His seminal work sweeps us into the 21st century and shows us the ineffable and fantastic intelligence of nature and the compelling possibilities of an architecture that aligns itself with nature’s genius.

Eugene Tsui, born in Cleveland, Ohio, of Chinese parents and fluent in the Mandarin Chinese and English languages, Eugene Tsui holds four professional degrees in architecture and city and regional planning having attended the University of Oregon, Columbia University Graduate School of Design and the University of California, Berkeley where he received an Interdisciplinary Doctorate in Architecture and Education. He has won numerous scholarships and professional research grants including those from the Graham Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts (Canada). At the age of seventeen he won an “Honorable Mention for Most Exciting Design” from an American Institute of Architects competition. He was an intern architect at the age of nineteen and at twenty was the youngest member of the Organizing Committee of the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics design team as the assistant to the Senior Coordinator. Eugene Tsui was apprenticed to the renowned American architect, Bruce Goff, from 1976 until Goff’s death in 1982. In 1996,1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2002 he was awarded the Presidential Sports Award and is the current four-time Senior Olympics Gymnastics All-Around Champion.

  • Daniel Casarin: What are your “secrets” as designer and what have taught you from men like Gaudi and Wright?

Io voglio conoscere i come e i perché.

Dr. Eugene Tsui: I have written four books about my “secrets” so they are not so secret. But they are, up to now, still very little understood. The “secrets” are only secret because we human beings don’t ask questions of nature to reveal the answers. In many other fields some answers have been found but the impetus to find out how to APPLY nature’s principles is the pervue of architects, designers and engineers, but we are not motivated this way. We have compromised ourselves as the conforming cogs in the wheel of society and are concerned with financial gain and career acknowledgment rather than asking serious and profound questions and finding and applying solutions.

Men like Wright and Gaudi have taught me that there are many ways to approach design and individuals like them have found their own way in design with nature as a guide.  They have perceived certain aspects of nature as a metaphoric tool, i.e., the tower with cantilevered floors is like a tree with its branches, or, the tall spire is like an elongated parabola; they have developed a perception that acknowledges nature as a force to learn from—and this is an important step.

But I am going much further and much deeper. I am asking the questions of how and why and with what materials does nature create the way it does?  How would nature solve a specific problem if it were asked to do so?  I want to know the how’s and why’s. I am not merely using nature as an “inspiration”, an aesthetic resource or a thing to be emulated and mimicked.  I want to find out the mind of nature; to find out the force that initiates nature to create the way it does.  This is at the root of creation and if architects, if the whole of humanity, could align itself with the profound creative intelligence of nature then we all might have a better understanding of why we are here and what is our relationship with one another and with the natural universe around us. Other architects are practicing their own way. I am practicing nature’s way. There is a world of difference between the two.

Dr. Eugene Tsui: Tsui Design and Research, Inc. was created as a professional design business and gradually evolved to into a research and education laboratory. I began to see that the “professional” business paradigm was not a practical model for our work.  We were and are not in the “business” of architecture because earning money was never the priority or even the orientation of our office.

Many of the persons in the office starting from the year 1990, were university students and professionals who dreamed about creating a different more imaginative world.  As we began our research into nature we began to discover and understand an entirely different universe of ideas and applications.   In a sense, you might say that we were absorbed into a different dimension of thinking and application—nature’s dimension—and were transformed by what we discovered.  And, to this day, we have continued to engage the secrets of nature—with the added motivation that humanity now has come to a time that it is no longer a philosophy—that the study of nature and its applications are no longer a study—now they are the only solution to our survival.   We have destroyed the world to such an extent that we now must find a way to survive.   In 1990, there was still a chance to find other ways.  Now, the situation is dire, and we simply must stop what we are doing, just so we have a chance to survive.

Now, our office is transforming itself to completely become an educational center — The Telos Foundation. This non-profit organization was founded in 1989 as an educational arm of our office.  In 18 years it seems the office has become more and more like the Foundation itself.  In the near future we will officially disband the office and become the Telos Foundation as a complete and full-time laboratory and school.  We have made plans to build a school on 170 acres at the base of Mount Shasta in California. Mount Shasta is the biggest volcanic mountain, in mass, in the USA.

  • Daniel Casarin: What would be your advice to young designers and architects that are about to venture themselves in these fields into a new project?

Dr. Eugene Tsui: Dedicate your lives to the rigorous and scientific study of nature as a basis for developing ideas that can help humanity to survive the future!  Ask yourself this question when starting a project:  “How would nature solve this problem if it were given the same criteria”?    Always seek to find the best, the ultimate solution to your design requirements.  Don’t be satisfied with merely A solution but seek to find the ULTIMATE solution—the solution that cannot be improved upon—that satisfies all manner of requirements and limitations.

Always question your self-imposed assumptions and expectations and search for an expression of personal exuberance and originality—originality that is purposeful and meaningful, not just distinctive.

Dr. Eugene Tsui: Europe has its own history, languages and people and we should be thankful for this.  We are all influenced and shaped by our particular environment and Europe has a great many unique environments and people.  We are all together on this planet and Europe is one area with its own character and distinctions.

  • Daniel Casarin: In your opinion what is the state of contemporary designers and design and how could they find more sustainable ways of designing to enter into symbiosis with the surrounding and natural environment?

Dr. Eugene Tsui: The present state of design, as it has ever been, is influenced and molded by the opinions and trends of the day.   The opinions and trends of the day are not important.  What is important is the study of those principles and things that are timeless and immutable.  Why?  Because principles give us insight and understanding of ourselves and of the greater universe which surrounds us.  The greatest source for principles is nature.

When a Potter’s Wasp builds a spherical nest of mud to store its food it is practicing the principle of minimizing materials and labor and maximizing the structural strength and volumetric capacity of its nest.  It is doing the most with the least and there is no waste of materials left over.    It is practicing a great law of economics:  Conserving energy and materials to create the greatest functional result.  It’s amazing that every living creature innately practices this—in fact their life depends on it.

But humanity has not learned this principle. Humanity creates things leaving tremendous waste because much of our designs are based upon preconceived image—not function.  Everything we create, whether it be a pair of high heels (Stilettos) or a square skyscraper (high rise building) makes no sense and are, in fact, detrimental to the user.  And it is because of image that we acquire things and then do not use them for very long.  It is a scientific fact that, in industrial countries, 99% of everything we buy is thrown away within 6 months!  99%! That is horrifying! Our societies have created a planned obsolescence model that is consuming the entire planet and poisoning everything; our water, our air and our soil.

This is why it is paramount that we study nature because nature can show us the way to live and survive. But we are destroying nature so we are destroying the very thing that can save us.  It is incredibly puzzling why we have allowed ourselves to come to this point in time. I spoke about these issues 30 years ago in schools and universities and I was expelled from prominent universities for speaking out about the need to study nature and learn from it. But no one would listen at that time when we still had a chance to create a gradual change. Now it is a matter of immediately stopping our environmental destruction, our energy and resource consuming—or die. It is that simple.

  • Daniel Casarin: Il tuo prossimo futuro cosa ti riserva? Ed in quale progetto stai dedicando maggiori energie?
  • Daniel Casarin: What does your near future hold for you?  Which project are you dedicating most of your energies to?

Dr. Eugene Tsui: I have dedicated my life to saving humanity from certain destruction. What else could anyone of conscience possibly do with their lives?  If we have no home (the Earth) then anything else is meaningless.  And every other community and global issue is also irrelevant for without a home nothing else matters.   We can discuss political turmoil, racial prejudice, social injustice, war and famine, but without a home—our planet—none of these issues have meaning because we will all die anyway—maybe not in our life time—but our children and grand children will be left with a devastated planet and no hope for a future.  I am dedicating my energies to this one dominant issue.

As an architect I seek to radically transform our understanding of the built environment—to design and implement the working principles of nature so that our architecture expresses the same kind of profound intelligence, originality and functional capabilities that every natural habitat contains.  We cannot continue with the consumer-driven, historical stylistics that define architecture so far.  Our architecture, as it has been practiced for thousands of years, is wasteful of materials energy and contributes 50% to the state of global pollution.  Not only that, it promotes a wasteful practice of living by accommodating the consumer-madness life that we all have come to know.

I want the world to know that we must stop our conditioned lives. We must stop our image oriented world.  We must stop this drive to acquire, to be affluent and to expand.  We must change everything we take for granted, like our diets, our passive life styles, our reliance on convenience, ease and comfort.

For instance, I eat every other day. This allows me to consume 50% less natural resources and my organic waste is cut by 70 to 80%. It also gives me over 1000 hours more productive time per year because I do not spent 3 to 4 hours a day eating or getting groceries or going to restaurants.  It is also a scientific fact that radically reducing our calorie intake gives us the ability to live longer—up to 1/3 more life span in tested animals.  That’s incredible!  I also notice that I need less sleep and have plenty of energy. You feel lighter and more responsive to everything and your conscience is at peace knowing that you are helping the global condition by using half the natural resources and contributing only 20% to 30% to the organic waste of the planet. It is truly a wonderful way to eat!   People who are on this diet have lost tremendous amounts of weight—sometimes up to 30 kilograms in half-a-year.  So this diet also solves the world wide obesity problem where ever third person in the world is dangerously obese.

I am a very serious athlete—a two-time world champion in boxing—and preparing for winning two more world championships this year. So I am very, very concerned about my physical health and abilities. I cannot afford to fool around and make mistakes in my diet, physical strategies and general physical state.  That is why I very much feel so comfortable with this eating-every-other-day diet. It is completely ecological and intelligent. I know that I will need a lot of time to accomplish the tasks in front of me so by finding ways to extend my time and energy I am better able to accomplish these tasks. But perhaps the point I am making is that we must question everything we do and question our values, our beliefs and our practices—our daily life—and be open to seriously experiment with the truth that we seek and find.  If something disturbs us we must question the reasons, the roots of what bothers us and change our lives to accommodate the truth.

To dream is our highest calling—and dreams accomplish wonderful things. We must go forth and dream of a world where humanity and nature are woven into a single garment of destiny to the mutual goodness and survival of both.

Daniel & Araceli, thank you for giving me this opportunity to speak.
