- Araceli de la Parra: How was the Tourism 2023 project born?
Vicky Murray: Come potrai immaginare qui al Forum for the future lavoriamo di continuo non sul presente ma nel futuro! Nessuno può prevedere il futuro ma possiamo pensare al futuro per quello che vorremmo che sia. È fondamentale e necessario proprio questo. In questo periodo il mondo affronta delle pesanti incertezze mentre il clima cambia e le risorse naturali diminuiscono a fronte di una popolazione globale che voracemente ne consuma sempre più. È per questo che un approccio di pensiero sui “futuri possibili” è alla base del nostro metodo per promuovere lo sviluppo sostenibile. Costruiamo scenari futuribili, esploriamo nuove tendenze, creiamo visioni di un futuro sostenibile e sviluppiamo strumenti per renderli “a prova del futuro”. Il settore dei viaggi e del turismo in generale, ad esempio, è un settore chiave per Formum for the future e il progetto Tourism 2023 è stato pensato precisamente per questo, per rendere l’industria di questo settore resistente al futuro.
Tourism 2023 intende focalizzare il progetto anche nel ricavo di giusti profitti durante questo prossimo quarto di secolo e adesso più che mai con questa recessione globale, Tourism 2023 è un progetto che ha come obiettivo quello di far tendere all’industria di questo settore verso una visione a lungo termine. Tourism 2023 ha dato l’opportunità di pensare a lungo termine e chiedersi: “in quale tipo di ambiente lavoreremo nel 2023?”, oppure “come sarà il turismo estero dall’Inghilterra e l’industria intera se fosse sostenibile?” e “di che cosa abbiamo bisogno oggi e cosa possiamo fare tutti per far sì che ciò accada?”
Tourism 2023 ha dato ai partecipanti l’opportunità di contemplare problematiche, che per l’industria almeno sono impensabili: “cosa accadrebbe se la gente volesse volare sempre più futuro? Cosa accadrebbe se il petrolio arrivasse a $200 al barile e si fermasse a quella quota?” Si tratta di pianificare un futuro drammaticamente diverso da oggi e di essere in una posizione tale da creare prodotti e pacchetti vacanze per la maggioranza degli operatori turistici che creino profitto, non distruggano l’ambiente e diano massimi benefici per la comunità.
Vicky Murray: As you might expect we do a lot of Futures work here at Forum for the future! No one can predict the future, but we can think more about the sort of future we want, and how it could be achieved. In fact, it is vital that we do just that. The world faces greater uncertainty as the climate changes, supplies of natural resources diminish, and global population and consumption rise. That’s why futures thinking underpins our approach to promoting sustainable development. We build future scenarios, explore new trends, create visions of a sustainable future and develop future-proofing tools. The travel and tourism sector is a key sector that we work with. And Tourism 2023 is designed to do exactly that – future proof the industry.
With the focus so firmly on making a profit in the next quarter, now more than ever with a global recession, Tourism 2023 was designed to lift the industry out of this day-to-day short term mindset. The project has given the industry the opportunity to think longer term and ask – ‘what kind of environment could we be operating in in 2023’? ‘What would the UK outbound travel and tourism industry look like if it was sustainable’? And ‘what do we need to do now, together, to make that happen’?
The project has given participants the opportunity to contemplate issues that –for the industry at least – are unthinkable: ‘what if people don’t want to fly as much in future? What if oil price reaches $200 a barrel and stays that high’? It’s about planning for a future that could be radically different from today and being in a position to create mainstream holiday products that are profitable, don’t damage the environment and bring maximum benefits to the community.

- Araceli de la Parra: What kind of results do you hope to obtain, how detailed or in depth will proposals be?
Vicky Murray: Il progetto Tourism 2023 come altri organizzati da Forum for the future produrrà tre elementi chiave. Primo, abbiamo prodotto una serie di scenari plausibili e allargati esplorando alcune perplessità critiche per l’industria che si avvia verso il 2023. Creando descrizioni di quattro diversi possibili di mondi futuri in cui l’industria potrebbe trovarsi ad operare. Ogni mondo sottolinea diverse sfide e opportunità per un mondo più sostenibile. Da questo abbiamo costruito una visione di quello che l’industria potrebbe essere se fosse sostenibile a livello, sociale, ambientale ed economico e una strategia su come questo potrebbe avvenire. Attualmente stiamo dando la priorità ad alcune aree dove la collaborazione fra diverse discipline è necessaria ma dove poco o nulla è stato mai fatto finora. Al termine del progetto speriamo di consegnarlo all’industria insieme ad una dettagliata lista di passi successivi, con traguardi a breve e lungo termine.
Vicky Murray: The project will produce three key outputs: Firstly we have produced a set of plausible, stretching scenarios exploring critical uncertainties for the industry towards 2023. These are descriptions of four different possible future worlds that the industry could be operating in. Each world highlights different sustainability challenges and opportunities. From this we’ve constructed a vision of what the industry would look like if it was socially, environmentally and economically sustainable, and a strategy for how it can make it happen. We’re currently prioritising a number of areas where collaborative action is needed – but where little or nothing is currently being done. By the end of the project we hope to hand the project over to the industry with detailed workstreams to take forward – with long term goals and short term targets.

Vicky Murray: A Forum for the future, abbiamo due “futuristi” che ad esempio su Tourism 2023 stanno lavorando a stretto contatto con due specialisti di turismo sostenibile. Ogni progetto ha comunque un Consiglio e un Comitato dirigente insieme ai diversi rappresentanti delle Associazioni industriali e del commercio, fornitori di trasporti, governo, ONG del turismo e docenti di diverse discipline con cui collaboriamo a seconda del progetto. Tourism 2023 ad esempio è stato sostenuto dall’ABTA, BA, Carnival UK, Thomas Cook, The Cooperative Travel, The Travel Foundation e TUI Travel.
Vicky Murray: From Forum for the future we have two futurists working on this project and two sustainable tourism specialists. The project has an Advisory Board and Steering Committee with representatives from the Industry and Trade Associations, transport providers, Government, Tourism NGOs, and academia. The project is supported by ABTA, BA, Carnival UK, Thomas Cook, The Cooperative Travel, The Travel Foundation and TUI Travel.

Vicky Murray: Abbiamo creato diverse unità che sono state sviluppate durante nove mesi circa di ricerca e consulenza, inclusa la ricerca a tavolino, interviste ad esperti e una serie di quattro workshop per l’industria. Il gruppo di consiglieri ed il Comittato di Tourism 2023 hanno guidato passo passo il team di lavoro. In totale abbiamo lavorato con un centinaio di persone e professionalità diverse, tutte con un qualche interesse verso l’industria dei viaggi e del turismo. Lanceremo questi nuovi scenari, visioni e strategie al Convenio dell’ABTA Travel Convention in Barcelona ad ottobre. Nel frattempo stiamo ottimizzando i diversi risultati e aiutando organizzazioni individuali ad elaborare le diverse implicazioni strategiche di questi scenari e visioni future. Vicky Murray: These outputs have been developed though nine months of research and consultation including desk research, expert interviews and a series of four industry workshops. The Tourism 2023 Advisory Board and Steering Committee have guided their development. In total we have engaged with over 100 individuals with an interest in the travel and tourism industry. We will launch the scenarios, vision and strategy at the ABTA Travel Convention in Barcelona in October. Between now and then we will be in consultation and finalizing the outputs. We will also be helping individual organizations to think through the strategic implications of the scenarios and vision. Vicky Murray: Idee affascinanti! Sicuramente sono d’accordo sul fatto che il viaggiare abbia un grande potenziale per promuovere la comprensione culturale nel mondo. Ha anche il potere di sollevare milioni di persone dalla povertà se si riuscisse a creare un meccanismo che assicuri i profitti sui viaggi e sul turismo che siano condivisi in modo adeguato con le comunità indigene. Questa sostenibilità sociale deve poi essere bilanciata con l’impronta ambientale che il turismo ha oggi. Spesso viaggiamo in paesi dove c’è scarsità di acqua, ma dove esistono comunque campi da golf e piscine che peggiorano la problematica. Sovrasviluppiamo alberghi distruggendo l’ambiente naturale e rovinando spesso quello che siamo proprio lì per visitare. Il nostro trasporto rilascia ingenti quantità di CO2 e gas serra e sarà un quota sempre che peserà sempre più nel bilancio del futuro. Ma sicuramente con un pò d’innovazione, l’impatto ambientale potrà essere ridotto.
Detto questo, alcuni dei scenari di Tourism 2023 esplorano scenari futuribili dove le persone sono limitate nel loro viaggiare e non vorranno più spostarsi lontano da casa. Forse saranno più consapevoli sui danni che stiamo facendo al nostro pianeta e si prenderanno la propria responsabilità. Forse saranno scoraggiati dai prezzi alti e dal terrorismo. Qualunque sia la motivazione, la maggior parte di noi potrebbe scegliere di esplorare luoghi più vicini a casa propria e come afferma giustamente Eugene Tsui saremmo sorpresi e affascinati da quello che scopriremo.
Vicky Murray: Fascinating ideas! I certainly agree that travel has the amazing potential to promote cultural understanding across the world. It also has the power to lift millions out of poverty, if done in a way that ensures profits from travel and tourism are shared fairly with host communities. This, I think, needs to be balanced with the environmental footprint that travel currently has. We travel to places that are often hit by water shortages – where golf courses and swimming pools make the problem worse. We overdevelop resorts, destroying the natural environment and ruining the very thing we often travel to see. Our transport emits carbon dioxide, and will take up an increasing amount of our carbon budgets in future. But – with a bit of innovation – all these impacts can be reduced.
That said, several of our Tourism 2023 scenarios explore futures where people are restricted from travel, or no longer want to travel so far from home. Perhaps they are more aware of the damage we are doing to our planet and take some personal responsibility. Perhaps they are put off by high prices or the threat of terrorism. Whatever the reason, more and more of us could be choosing to explore things closer to home in future and, as Eugene Tsui shows us, being surprised and fascinated by what we find.
